The final objective is to provide students with an overview of the implications of the genetic basis in the various pathological situations, with particular reference to the aspects of greatest interest for nursing practice. In detail, at the end of the course the student will have the necessary knowledge for Describe the genetic basis of human pathologies and the means available to diagnose hereditary diseases. Describe the genetic component of numerous diseases. Illustrate the knowledge derived from the human genome project, the impact this has had on health care, and the diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities of diseases with a genetic basis. Describe the latest information on the genetic basis of cancer, drug response, and transplantation.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

The student will have to acquire the ability to integrate the knowledge assimilated in the previous teachings, relating to basic sciences, with the aspects relevant to the various pathological conditions in order to understand the complexity of the disease state and identify paths to accompany patients and their families .

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Acquisition of the ability to apply theoretical knowledge related to medical genetics, to solving problems related to the management of patients with genetic-based diseases.

INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT

Acquisition of conscious autonomy of judgment with reference to the evaluation and interpretation of the patient's and family's needs.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Acquisition of skills and tools for communication in written and oral form, in Italian, together with the use of graphic and formal languages.

LEARNING SKILLS

Acquisition of autonomous learning skills and self-assessment of one's own preparation, suitable for undertaking subsequent studies and professional commitment with a high degree of autonomy

The course consists of 15 hours of lectures on the various topics included in the program with the aid of teaching material consisting of power-point presentations and articles taken from scientific journals. Compatibly with the trend of the current epidemic, the lessons will be held in person and the teaching material will be made available to students on the Campusnet platform.

Verification of learning of the Medical Genetics module takes place with a written test which may be followed by an oral test. The written test consists of 30 multiple choice questions covering the entire program of the module. The mark out of thirty will be determined based on the number of corrected responses, without penalization for uncorrected or unanswered response, it will contribute to the final mark of the course which will derive from the weighted average of all the modules.

At the request of the students, ad hoc meetings can be organized, also electronically, for any clarifications or insights on topics of particular interest.

The systematic use of textbooks is not considered necessary. During the course, indications will be given for the reading of scientific works pertinent to the topics covered in class.
